Sadly, the pandemic has increased the cost of batons due to the supply of steel. Prices have doubled in the past couple of years. Twirling athletes typically have 2 to 5 batons.
Baton twirling shoes are necessary in competition and for uniformity on teams. Twirling athletes typically have 2 to 3 pairs at all times.
For team practices it is important that all twirlers wear the same thing. Since twirling athletes practice with their team 2 to 3 times per week, they have 2 or 3 different practice uniforms.
Typically twirling athletes are on 2-3 teams, each requiring a different costume. And, they would also need 2-3 costumes for individual competition. As you can see, this adds up quickly.
Competitive baton twirling athletes have a coach that teaches them one-on-one. This is an important tool to be successful on the competition floor.
For the Individual Twirling Athlete
This number can vary, but this is the average entry fee for a contest. Of course this can be higher depending on the number of events entered, and if it a Regional or National competition.
This is only needed if you are attending in contests outside your local region. Competitive twirling athletes will attend local contests, but the best competition can be found regionally and nationally, which means traveling further distances.

Below are approximate costs to have a contest. Keep in mind that the entry fees paid by the contestant goes towards these expenses, but the goal of ODTF is to lower the costs to the contest directors, so they can keep the entry fees down.
Baton twirling contests must be held in a gymnasium with a high ceiling, due to the tricks the twirling athletes perform, a high ceiling is a must. The price will vary.
This price will, of course, vary depending on how far the judge has to travel to and from the contest. Typically the contest director will pay the judge $125-$150 for a day of judging, pay for their hotel room, reimburse for food, gas and tolls. If they live far enough away, air fare would be involved as well.
This price will vary based on the contest. Local contests are the lowest with regional and national contests costing more, as the awards are bigger and ornate. Cash scholarships are sometimes given as well.
Most gyms require insurance coverage for the contest to be held there
Decorations, printing supplies, signage, extra misc awards.
